President's Message

President’s End of the Year Message: We put FPAOC on the Map in 2015

What an exciting year we had! The financial markets do what they do best: they go up and they go down, and not necessarily in that order from one day to the next. We, the Financial Planning Association of Orange County (FPAOC), did what we do best and that is connecting those who provide, support, and benefit from professional financial planning. We reached out to the community, academic leaders, students, advocacy groups, legislative leaders, and our allied professionals – all while serving our clients.

We did a lot. We put FPAOC on the Map.

We worked really hard to serve our growing membership of 530 members while having a lot of fun. We educated ourselves with keynote speakers at our Quarterly Education Meetings. We played with our children at the inaugural Chapter Picnic. We took a cruise around Newport Harbor. With your participation and engagement, and the assistance of multiple professional associations and our wonderful partners, this year’s Allied Professionals Summit was among the best we have ever had. The attendance was sold-out, the speakers were terrific, and we have enjoyed tremendous positive feedback from attendees.

All this work takes a great board and many volunteers on each of the committees. A very special thank you to the 2015 Board of Directors:

  • Howard Erman, Chairman
  • Wil Smith, President Elect
  • Jacqueline Zweig, Treasurer
  • Bonnie Stramer, Secretary
  • Mark Prendergast, Advocacy Chair
  • Balaji Rao, Allied Professionals Chair
  • David MacLeod, Communications Chair
  • Aileen Danley, Membership Chair
  • Scot Shier, Partners Chair
  • David Sweet, Pro Bono/Community Outreach Chair
  • Julie Bray, Programs Chair
  • Kelly MacRae, Public Relations Chair
  • Daniel Sands, Volunteer Development Chair
  • Carol Bobke, Chapter Administrator

We have started planning for 2016...Engage!!! At our October board meeting, we elected our 2016 Board Members. Congratulations to our incoming Board members, you will meet them shortly at our November Quarterly Education Meeting. Please come and join us in the study groups, breakfasts and mixers. Volunteer…your reward will be as great as your participation!

This year we implemented:

Keep: What are the things that we should keep doing?
Stop: What are some things that we should stop doing?
Start: What are some things that we should start doing?

Each year we strive to improve the ways we serve our Orange County chapter. We would love to hear your feedback on what we should Keep-Stop-Start. Email your suggestions to me so we can prepare for 2016… Engage!!!

Andi YH Kang, CFP®, CAP®
FPAOC President 2015

Allied Professionals Summit

The 8th Annual Allied Professionals Summit was a huge success! A sold-out crowd packed the Pacific Club on September 29th to enjoy an afternoon of learning, networking, and inspiration. Glenn Stearns, founder and CEO of Stearns Lending, enthralled the audience with his life story. Participants then got to choose between two educational breakout sessions with Steve Williams of RCS Securities and Brody Browe, Franklin Square Capital Partners. Scott West, head of Invesco Consulting, was a perfect choice for the final keynote session, getting the crowd involved in learning simple – but not so obvious – word choices which can help bring success to any financial business. And it was easy to tell that the day was a hit by how many attendees stayed for wine and appetizers, connecting with new acquaintances and old friends.

Thank you to our co-presenters: CFA Society of Orange County, California Society of Enrolled Agents, Orange County Chapter, and NAIFA Orange County. Also, a huge thanks to our partners: RC Securities, Franklin Square Capital Partners, AllianceBernstein, Brown & Streza Attorneys at Law, Cal Lutheran School of Management MBA in Financial Planning, and Invesco. Last but not least, the Summit would not have been possible without the many FPAOC volunteers who gave countless hours planning and preparing for this event. It was truly a group effort, and we are grateful for all your hard work!

Mark your calendar now for next year’s Summit to be held Friday, September 23, 2016, at the Pacific Club.

Chapter Picnic

Three cheers to the Volunteer Development Committee for putting on the first-ever FPA of Orange County Chapter Picnic! The highlight of the day was getting to be with fellow members outside of our normal business-related meetings. Who knew we had so many cute kids and grandkids in our chapter? (We have a lot!) The good food, fun games, and huge Lord Abbett bounce castle were all hits. Thank you to Brown & Streza for making the event possible, and thank you to AllianceBernstein for providing snow cones to beat the heat, UCI Extension for the many picnic games, and Lord Abbett for the popular bounce castle. We appreciate your support!

Orange County Financial Planning Day

Financial Planning Day is always one of the most anticipated events of the year for FPAOC, and this year’s event was bigger than ever. Our attendance at the Huntington Beach Central Library on October 17th increased more than 20% over last year. This year we offered a dozen workshops on topics ranging from investing during turbulent times to Social Security planning, plus new topics offered specifically for teachers and Vietnamese-speaking community members. CFP® professionals met non-stop throughout the day with individuals who had financial planning questions. Over 50 volunteers helped make the day a success.

Thank you to Santori Law, Fox College Funding, CA State Senator Janet Nguyen and her staff, plus the many elected officials and community members who partnered with us. We were able to demonstrate the benefit of financial planning to many, and we hope to grow the event further next year!
