Join us for this informative event at UCI from 9 to 5 pm. We’ll start the day with an economic update from Dr. Esmael Adibi, Chair of Economic Analysis at Chapman University. He always receives rave reviews from our members and we welcome Dr. Adibi back! Next we’ll hear from Mitch Anthony on moving from ROI to ROL, or Return on LifeTM. It promises to be a thought provoking session on our value proposition to our clients. We’ll also hear from Jason Brady, portfolio manager at Thornburg Funds, on where to invest for income in light of the current market environment. Not to be missed! David Lawrence from Global Practice Network will share the latest trends in technology and ways to implement them in our practices. Lastly, we are in for a treat as special guest and Master Sommelier, Eddie Osterland, teaches us about power entertaining with food and wine. And we end the day with some good food and fine wine of our own, while providing a time to connect with our partners and fellow members. I look forward to seeing you there!

by Manoj Athavale, Ph.D., and Joseph M. Goebel, Ph.D.

The authors’ analysis suggests that a 4 percent withdrawal rate will result in portfolio failure with greater probability than previously believed, and the truly “safe” withdrawal rate-2.52 percent-is significantly smaller than industry norms.

If you volunteer your time to any OC Community-based Organizations, please report your volunteer work via our new BRAG List function.

By completing the data fields, you help FPA OCC keep track of pro bono and community outreach volunteer work within the OC community. You will also help FPA National maintain statistics for our organization's national profile with the media. Both help to highlight our profession.

If you have any questions, please contact Julie Holmes-Grady at [email protected]

As an FPA OCC pro bono volunteer, would you be interested in establishing a relationship with a "pro bono client" over a 6-month period? Or perhaps over a 1-year period?

I have been asked by a number of OC charitable organizations if we, the FPA OCC, would provide volunteers to meet this community need. As Chair of the FPA OCC Pro Bono/Community Outreach Committee, I need to get a feel from the FPA OCC membership as to the time you would consider offering.

To help you in these matters, the FPA offers "Money 101," a free online financial assessment tool for you to use, which is accessible to both planners and their pro bono clients. This tool is provided to us for free by the Foundation for Financial Planning.

Please notify me at [email protected] if you have an interest in establishing a longer-term relationship with a pro bono client.

WomanSage, a series of workshops, March 2011
Linda Barlow, CFP®, a former FPA OCC President and Evelyn Zohlen, CFP®, 2010 FPA OCC President presented FPA financial education material on three consecutive Thursday evenings, March 10th, 17th and 24th 2011 in Santa Ana, CA.

The series was presented to a group of thirty-five (35) women who were re-entering the workforce in early 2011. The three presentations were based on financial survival in hard times as well as general financial planning topics and techniques of which these were only three evenings in a long series of workshops made available by WomanSage for these women. The Santa Ana chapter of WomanSage does this regularly for women who need access to the wealth of information many of us take for granted. The attending women must submit applications to the group so that professionals can assist them with resume writing, interviewing skills, clothing, hair, makeup, financial planning, life coaching, and business coaching.

The national organization WomanSage provides support for women in midlife through educational programs and social philanthropy. The organization is a member-driven community of women 45 years and older, united to promote women in the second half of their lives.

Operation HOPE event April 2011
We were privileged to work with Operation HOPE (www.operationhope.org) on an event on April 6, 2011. FPA OCC provided 11 Volunteers for the one-half day event. Volunteers were: Susan Frank, Gary Grinsell, Julie Holmes-Grady, Stanley Hutchison, Paul Kirz, Mischa Martineau, Tim Neuville, Jim O'Keefe, Jody Schneelicht, Bonnie Stamer, and Katherine Szem.

Operation HOPE coordinated the event by providing a training webinar for the Volunteers to go through the organization's material which included the two modules the Volunteers were assigned to teach: Basics of Banking as well as Checking & Savings.

Operation HOPE sent the Volunteers to two Santa Ana Middle Schools, MacArthur (Douglas) Fundamental Intermediate and Willard (Frances E.) Intermediate to work with over 300 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.

The Volunteers enjoyed the time spent with the students. A number of volunteers asked to introduce the Operation HOPE financial education material at their children's schools.

Finding Your Ideal Client

Finding Your Ideal Client
by Ellen De Domenico

When financial planners launch their own practices, like most new entrepreneurs they often find it difficult to turn down business; they often feel they must take any business that comes along to generate cash flow and get established. Especially after the recent-and perhaps continuing-severe economic crisis, investment advisers and financial planners are taking business wherever they can get it. This might work in the short term, but is it the best way to market overall?

A much more rewarding way to grow your business is to develop a marketing plan, a guideline for promoting your business. But before you launch a marketing plan, you must first determine the kind of business you want, identify your strengths and describe your ideal client.
